内容简介:

Pragmatics - the systematic study of language in use - is a rapidly developing discipline in linguistics. Since its inception, classical and neo-Gricean pragmatics has revolutionized pragmatic theorizing and has to date remained one of the foundation stones of contemporary thinking in linguistic pragmatics and the philosophy of language. In this lecture, I shall first outline a version of neo-Gricean pragmatics, which has put the classical Gricean pragmatic theory on a much more rigorous basis. I shall then assess the role this version of neo-Gricean pragmatics plays in effecting a radical simplification of the lexicon, semantics, and syntax in linguistic theory, utilizing some of my own research in these areas. Finally, I shall further demonstrate the predictive and explanatory power of the neo-Gricean pragmatic theory by showing how it can shed light on certain legal cases such as the Clinton impeachment case and account for the communicative aspect of relationship breakdown.
