This presentation will offer an overview of three approaches to teaching English for use in university-level study: (1) the sustained content-based approach; (2) English for general academic purposes; and (3) discourse community initiation: a portfolio-based approach. Theories and research that can provide a rational for and guidance in strategies will also be discussed. Some action research possibilities will be suggested.

Talk 2: Strategies to publish in peer-refereed journals by Chinese Scholars (3:30-5pm)

Publishing research papers in ELT journals in China is both a relief and a torture for many universities professors in China, esp. in the field of English Language Teaching (ELT).   Many scholars confess that the only source of motivation is derived from external pressure coupled with irresistible anxiety.  Publishing articles in China undertakes a different route of preparation from what is normally done in US academia.   In this talk, Liu will share his bicultural perspectives in publishing based on his own experience and observations in both China and US.   He will highlight successful strategies Chinese applied linguists use in publishing in peer-refereed journals, and explore the impact of psychological stress and sociocultural mistrust on the defective cycle in ELT publication in China.  Liu will end his talk by encouraging colleagues in China to understand the process of publication and be part of the game with positive attitudes towards transforming the future of ELT in China.

Speaker: Jun Liu, Professor and Head in the Department of English at the University of Arizona, and Director of Confucius Institute at the University of Arizona (CIUA), recently appointed as Assistant Vice Provost for Global Initiatives at the University of Arizona.  Dr. Liu's research interests include language policy, globalization of language education, intercultural communication, curriculum and standards development, teacher education and teacher development, instructed second language acquisition, and second language writing.
